Why Restaurants Will Not Just Survive…But
Thrive after the pandemic. Opening a restaurant demands a fervent love of the business, from the owners to the chefs and often the waiters and busboys who fantasize about someday owning their own place. Even restaurateurs who beg their sons and daughters not to follow them in the rough-tough business find their children often leave other, more secure professions to come back to work in the family’s restaurants. And because of that love restaurants have historically proven far more resilient than many other small businesses, not least after wars and pandemics have utterly destroyed them.
Do Consumers Trust Restaurants
To protect their health? A new survey indicates that safety and sanitation perceptions impact diners’ willingness to return to restaurants. Almost half of consumers—47%—trust restaurants and bars to take the necessary steps to ensure their health and safety in the future, according to a new study by Magid, a research consultancy based in Minneapolis. But near-term confidence is lower, the survey found, with only 31% of consumers planning to dine in within the next three months. The six-month outlook is a bit brighter: 57% of respondents said they expect to visit a restaurant by the fall.
Resy’s New Suite of Features Help Restaurants and Diners
Navigate the future of dining out. Resy, a subsidiary of American Express, will roll out new features this month that address the new realities of dining. The new features include an Automated Capacity Monitor that allows restaurants to set a capacity limit — say 50% — on their dining room to help ensure they don’t exceed occupancy regulations; a Mobile Waitlist tool that allows diners within close proximity of a restaurant to join a live waitlist and reduce host stand + bar area crowding; Resy at Home – Resy’s meal ordering and contactless pickup functionality that provides restaurants an additional revenue stream and diners a way to bring a bit of the restaurant experience home with them, and more.
Did You Know?
U.S. beef output is down way more than shutdowns suggest. American beef output is down a lot more than plant closures would have you believe — a sign that slowdowns at facilities will continue to keep meat supplies tight even when some production lines reopen. While many plants have stayed open, they’ve still been forced to slow output as producers combat a loss of labor. Social-distancing measures will also likely keep output trailing normal levels even as facilities reopen under President Donald Trump’s executive order.
Employee Tip
60 things to do when you’re stuck inside and bored. Boredom can feel impossible to escape. This is particularly true now, when many of us are stuck indoors due to social-distancing efforts necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19. Some people have children keeping them busy; others have even more work during this crisis. Others are just inside, looking at the same walls they’ve been looking at for days, potentially alone, and feeling like nothing can pull them out of this funk.
